CLUB HISTORY

In January of 1956, Mr. Bill McFarlane of the Peterborough Y.M.C.A., met with a few eager and determined individuals with philatelic interest to share some common ideas. Already by this time, Peterborough had a number of individuals who, most being close associates, all collected postage stamps. McFarlane enlisted the assistance of Mrs. Kathryn Lamb, wife of prominent Canadian stamp dealer, Richard Lamb, of Kitchener, Ontario, and of Mr. Eric Rushton, Chapter Co-ordinator of the Canadian Philatelic Society (C.P.S.). The few interested individuals met at the Peterborough Examiner with Mrs. Lamb, one day while she was in town prior to the starting of her newspaper column 'Your Stamp News', under her pen name of Kathryn Hansuld. The group concluded that there was more than enough interest to rekindle and form a stamp club.

We need to backtrack a bit there in history on the word "rekindle". Prior to this date of 1956, in fact 25 years earlier, Peterborough had a viable organized Stamp Club. Though much research has not brought to light any records on the earlier years, it has been ascertained in a brief letter of correspondence between McFarlane and Rushton of the C.P.S.

For all intensive purposes, the origin date which verifies the beginning of the now, 'Kawartha Stamp Club', and having met continuously since, is February 28, 1956.
