Press Release

ITEMS FROM THE ROYAL PHILATELIC COLLECTION IN CALGARY IN SEPTEMBER

Charles J.G. Verge, President of The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC), has announced that several items from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Collection will be exhibited at ROYAL*2006*ROYALE in Calgary, September 29-October 1, 2006.

In making the announcement Verge said, “The RPSC welcomes the classics of British North America from one of the greatest collections in the world and is grateful to her Majesty the Queen for graciously agreeing to this loan.”

Verge is “delighted that material from Her Majesty The Queen’s collection will be displayed in Canada’s West for the first time ever.” Items from the Collection have appeared at CAPEX shows in Toronto in the past.

There will be 11 frames of material which will include items from all the provinces that issued stamps prior to Confederation in 1867. Of particular interest will be a 12d. black on and off cover from the Province of Canada.

Other pre-Confederation items will feature large multiples of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and several examples of the very rare five-cent rose imperforate from Vancouver Island.

There will also be three frames showing pioneer airmails from Canada and Newfoundland, including rare and unique Alcock and Brown flight items and collateral material.

Verge said, “It is a great opportunity to see material from some of the most important aviation attempts in the world as well as witness how mail was carried across the Atlantic after World War I.” He added that much of this material “has never been seen before in North America.”

The slogan for ROYAL*2006*ROYALE, Canada’s 78th National Stamp Exhibition of The RPSC, is “A Royal Like No Other”. With 11 frames of stamps and other material from Her Majesty’s collection, seminars, meetings, dozens of dealers, hundreds of frames of exhibits in competition, and a stamp launch, it should well merit such a description.

ROYAL*2006*ROYALE will be held at the Coast Plaza Hotel and Conference Centre, 1316 - 33 Street NE, Calgary.
