THE RPSC NAMES FIVE NEW ‘ROYAL’ FELLOWS
At the 2006 annual meeting of The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC) held
in Calgary, Alberta September 29-October 1, Charles J. G. Verge, Secretary to
The RPSC Fellows, announced the installation of five new Fellows of the Society.
To qualify for Fellow status, candidates must meet at least one of the following
criteria: they have actively worked for the betterment of the RPSC; they have
promoted Canadian philately extensively through writing; and/or have, through a
number of activities, made Canadian philately better at the international level.
The five new Fellows are Francois Brisse, Ray Ireson, Ken Magee, Rick Penko, and
Ralph E. Trimble. Each has made a significant contribution to the promotion of
stamp collecting in Canada.
Francois Brisse, a chemical engineer by profession, is professor emeritus of the
Chemistry Department at Universite de Montreal. His contribution to philately
has been largely through his writing and editing. He was editor of Philatelie
Quebec from January 1987 to December 1993, and he continues to be a regular
contributor to that publication. He has served three terms as editor of
Philagems International including 2000 to date. He has been an organizer with
special credit for a philatelic exhibition Chemistry and Philately at the
Montreal Congress Centre in 1984. He also produces the annual exhibition program
for the Lakeshore Stamp Club. Soon to be published is A Comprehensive Listing
of the Illustrated Postmarks of Canada.
Ray Ireson, a native of Haslingden, Lancashire, England, was a career banker by
profession. He is the oldest living member (# 7) of the Lakeshore Stamp Club, a
club to which he has given dedication and exemplary service for many years. He
was chair of ROYAL*1991*ROYALE, and he has served in all the executive positions
of the Lakeshore Stamp Club. Ireson has several collecting interests, and he has
time to edit the Lakeshore club’s newsletter The Shoe Box. The author of
many philatelic articles, his Panama Canal Story has received four
National Grand Awards in Canada and the 1999 American Topical Association Grand
Award.
Kenneth H. Magee, a retired elementary school teacher, spends much of his time
with stamps and related interests. A collector since he was six years old, his
collections include the Faroes, Greenland, Ireland, some smaller British
colonies, and Canada. He has exhibited from each of his collections at various
levels. He has been a director of the RPSC since 1998, and he has been extremely
active in the promotion and development of grassroots philately in South Western
Ontario. It was Magee’s initiative that led to the development of uniform
exhibiting and judging programs for regional and local shows throughout Canada. He was a
co-chair for ROYAL*2003*ROYALE and he was on the planning committee for
ROYAL*2005*ROYALE.
Rick Penko, a graphic designer by profession, has been a leader in revitalizing
the stamp collecting community in Winnipeg. As president of the Winnipeg
Philatelic Society (WPS), he has encouraged co-operation between WPS and the
Seniors Stamp Club, the Scandinavian Collectors Club of Manitoba, and the Junior
Stamp Club of Winnipeg. He is the editor of The Buffalo, journal of the
WPS, to which he has added his graphic skills for the past 10 years. His
extensive collecting interests include Canada, the United States, Great Britain,
Germany, and Bangladesh. He is an accredited RPSC judge, a former member of the
Stamp Advisory Committee for Canada Post, and a member of many stamp collecting
organizations including RPSC, BNAPS, and APS.
Ralph E. Trimble’s chief focus in the hobby has been the study and research of
Canadian philately, especially a concerted study of the development of postage
with emphasis on re-entries. His work has confirmed the authenticity of many
finds, and he has mapped the production of most issues from 1851 to 1899. He has
been a member of RPSC for more than 25 years, and he holds membership in PSSC,
BNAPS, APS, CPSGB, and EFOCC. He is the current president of
the Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada and a director of the VG Greene
Philatelic Research Foundation. Trimble has received several awards for his
philatelic writing, and he has been a contributor to the Unitrade Specialized
Catalogue of Canadian Stamps.
Charles Verge said “the Fellows of the Society have made an important
contribution to stamp collecting and philatelic knowledge throughout Canada.”
The new group “are a credit to the hobby and will serve as wise counsel to the
Society.”
