NEW PRESIDENT AND NEW FACES ON ROYAL EXECUTIVE

At the 78th National Philatelic Convention of The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC) held in Calgary September 29-October 1, members re-elected five directors and elected three new faces to the Society’s Board. The directors, eight of whom are in their second year of a two-year term, chose a new president and a slate of officers for the coming year.

Re-elected directors are Peter Butler, Kenneth H. Magee, Rick Penko, George Pepall, and David Piercey with newcomers Peter Kritz, Richard Logan, and Michael O. Nowlan.

New president is Rick Penko of Winnipeg succeeding Charles J.G. Verge of Ottawa who served as head of the RPSC for six years. Joining Penko on the executive are Elizabeth Sodero, Halifax, vice-president and director of the slide program; Peter Kritz, Hanover, Ontario, treasurer and chair of the finance committee; Peter Butler, Toronto, secretary and director at National Office; and Charles J.G. Verge, Ottawa, immediate past president, historian and Canada Post liaison.

Other directors with their duties are Francois Brisse, Beaconsfield, Quebec, FQP Liaison; Raymond Ireson, Roxboro, Quebec, Medals and Awards; John Keenlyside, Vancouver; Ken Lewis, United Kingdom; Richard Logan, Ottawa, CPC Liaison and Development; Kenneth Magee Regional and Local Shows and Judges; R. F. Narbonne, McDonald Corners, Ontario, Dealer Liaison; and Michael O. Nowlan, Oromocto NB, Public Relations.

On his election as President, Rick Penko, a Fellow of the RPSC, said the Society “will face many challenges in the coming year.” Membership, he said “will be a primary focus. We have plans to increase our membership and make our national club more visible and functional.”

Another goal will be “to reach out to all chapters of the RPSC and offer support, service, and good communication.” There are also a couple of projects the executive would “like to implement in the future when finances permit.”
