Press Release
July 2005 RPSC NAMES FOUR NEW 'ROYAL' FELLOWS
At the 2005 annual meeting of The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC) held in London, Ontario May 27-29, President Charles J.G. Verge announced the installation of four new Fellows of the Society.
To qualify for Fellow status, candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria: they have actively worked for the betterment of The RPSC; they have promoted Canadian philately extensively through writing; and/or have, through a number of activities, made Canadian philately better known at the international level.
The four new Fellows are D. Robin Harris, Roger F. (Hank) Narbonne, John Peebles, and Ann Triggle. Each has made a significant contribution to the promotion of stamp collecting in Canada.
- D. Robin Harris has an outstanding list of philatelic publications to his credit which is accented by the seven-volume specialized catalogues of Elizabethan-era Canadian definitives. He currently edits The Buffalo, the monthly journal of the Winnipeg Philatelic Society; and The Corgi Times, the bi-monthly journal of the Elizabethan II Study Group of BNAPS. He also edited The Buffalo between 1984 and 1994. He is webmaster for The RPSC and he attends to his popular personal website of stamp collecting. Harris was recently appointed as editor of The Unitrade Specialized Catalogue of Canadian Stamps which will have him “redesign and enhance” that publication.
- Hank Narbonne is a long-standing and respected member of The RPSC and several other societies relating to the promotion of Canadian stamps. He is a director of The RPSC and one of the widely respected dealers among the members of the CSDA. He is also a competitive exhibitor and an accredited judge. He is co-author of Postal Rates and Fees of the Elizabethan Era (1952-2002) and The New Specialized Catalogue of Canada Post Official First Day Covers. He has an enviable record of giving his time to share his knowledge and expertise to all collectors - newcomers and veterans.
- John Peebles may be affectionately called ‘Mr. Canada’, but the term is appropriately applied to a man who founded and has headed the Canadiana Study Unit for 20 years. He also edits the Unit’s award-winning journal The Canadian Connection, which he enters in both national and international philatelic literature exhibitions. His aim through the Unit is to spread the word about Canadian philately throughout the world. His efforts have identified hundreds of worldwide stamps that have a Canadian connection. He is a member of The RPSC and several other stamp organizations. He is the epitome of a consummate volunteer being involved in many of the philatelic activities of his home town, London, Ontario, and of South-West Ontario.
- Ann Triggle is an excellent example of how cross-border stamp collectors can influence the hobby in two countries. Living in upstate New York, she has been involved in the philately of the United States and Canada for many years. A member of the Board of Directors of the RPSC, she was recently re-elected for a second two-year term. Her contribution to the administrative level of philately in Canada and the USA, particularly as it relates to judging programs has been immense. She was an important collaborator in devising and implementing the North American approach to judging and exhibiting. On behalf of The RPSC and the American Philatelic Society, she spearheaded a successful proposal to the FIP for the introduction of a One-frame Class at the world level. As the USA representative on the FIP Thematic Commission and a member of the FIP Thematic Bureau, she is in an excellent position to take the concerns of Canada as well as those of the USA to the Commission. Mrs. Triggle and the late Fred Jarrett, OC, RDP, are the only two philatelists to have concurrently served on the Boards of The RPSC and the APS.
Charles Verge said “this year’s selection of four Fellows clearly indicates the vast and diverse expertise that exists among collectors in this country.” The new Fellows, he said, “continue to add to the wealth of knowledge and experience The RPSC can count on.”
