April 7, 2001 The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada will pay tribute to two 50-year members when it meets in 73rd annual convention at Dorval (Montreal), Quebec April 6-8. The featured celebrities are Eric Rushton, Port Elgin, Ontario and Richard K. Malott, Nepean, Ontario. Both are Fellows of The RPSC, and both have distinguished philatelic credentials. Eric Rushton was named a Fellow of the Society in 1991 after a long list of accomplishments for stamp collecting in this country. Rushton started collecting as a boy in 1926 in St. Thomas, and considers he reached his peak between 1950 and 1970. His collecting interests are Canada, The Netherlands, and United States. One of Mr. Rushton's specialties is the Canada stamp issued for the Red Cross Conference on July 26, 1952. He wrote and published a comprehensive study of the stamp, and he owns the only sheet of 50 Red Cross stamps with the perforation variety where the vertical perforations are 30 degrees off while the horizontal perforations are correct. Rushton has been a member of numerous stamp clubs in south western Ontario and he was responsible for helping organize clubs in Ontario, Manitoba and parts of the U.S. On his election as a Fellow of RPSC, he said "stamps are more than just a hobby. They really are a passion of mine." He cited the technical features as "fascinating." Rushton was a career man with Ontario Hydro. Major (Ret.) Richard "Dick" K. Malott was born at Kingsville, Ontario near Windsor. After a 24-year career with the RCAF, he assumed the position of Chief Curator of Collections at the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa, a position he held for 17 years. As a stamp collector, his 22 years of service to The RPSC Board of Directors included terms as director, executive director, and advertising manager of The Canadian Philatelist. He was also a member of numerous other groups, especially those related to aerophilately. He has presented numerous lectures and written dozens of articles on the development of air mail services in Canada. He also distinguished himself in philatelic exhibiting earning 20 small gold and eight large gold medals for air mail exhibits internationally. He was elected a Fellow in 1986 The combined 100 years of RPSC membership adds up to vast experience that Eric Rushton and Dick Malott can share with members. Their dedicated and outstanding contributions to the hobby have given much to the society and stamp collecting in Canada.
