CANADA POST SPONSORS TOUR IN SUPPORT OF AMATEUR HOCKEY

Canada Post is a primary sponsor of the Goodyear Drive for Gold, a fun and original tour that gets underway this Sunday in St. John's, Newfoundland in support of the Canadian Hockey Association's (CHA) grassroots hockey programs.

From September 30 to January 23, 2002, a Zamboni sporting the logos of Canada Post and other sponsors will cross Canada with stops in 68 cities. In each city, people will be given the opportunity to ride the machine for a donation to the CHA. Canada Post will have at least one tour leg (one kilometre) in each community. The tour will also generate support for the members of the national hockey teams who will be heading to the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

As a contribution to the initiative, Canada Post has produced a special pre-stamped postcard to raise funds for the Canadian Hockey Association. The postcard will be on sale at corporate postal outlets in communities hosting the Goodyear Drive for Gold (and in corporate outlets within 50 kilometres). The face of the postcard will feature a painting by Michel Lapensée of youth playing hockey. The pre-paid postage will feature a Wayne Gretzky image and a message that says: “Thank you for supporting Canadian hockey.” To highlight the City of Brantford as community sponsor of the tour, postcards will be addressed to P.O. Box 99, Brantford ON N3T 5M3. The postcard will retail for $2 (plus taxes), with one dollar going to the CHA in support of its community programs. SportChek stores across the country, including Sport Expert and Intersport in Quebec, will also sell the item. Official unveilings of the postcard are taking place in Brantford, Ontario and St. John's, Newfoundland on September 28.

“The Goodyear Drive for Gold Tour will raise Canada Post's brand recognition by being part of a highly visible national initiative around Canada's popular, official winter sport,” says Alain Guilbert, vice-president, Communications.

Canada Post will also have a display as part of the CHA exhibit that will follow the Goodyear Drive for Gold tour in a colourful AMJ Van Lines truck. The exhibit will highlight Hockey Hall of Fame, CHA, Team Canada and Wayne Gretzky displays as well as the many hockey-related philatelic products Canada Post has developed over the years. People will be able to visit the truck at the City Centre of every community where the Zamboni stops.

For stamp collectors, the stamp design on the postal card repeats a design previously issued to honour NHL All-Stars:
